Kristen's Concert Picks: June gives us the sounds of summer!

June has arrived, washing heat waves over our fine city of Athens. So what's the best way to keep cool in this insane weather? Let's soak in some tunes! And this month is Athfest month, so we've got TONS of bands and events to look forward to. Can't wait!

Fri, June 3: Madeline @ 8 PM @ 40 Watt
With their soft dark rock tunes, Madeline and the Black Velvet Band's show at the 40 Watt is the perfect way to kick off the month. Best of all, this is the band's CD release party, so we'll get the chance to check out their latest songs too!

Sat, June 4: Lazer/Wulf @ 9:30 PM @ Caledonia Lounge
My friends just can't stop talking about Lazer/Wulf's powerful sound. Be sure to get a taste of their tunes at this show!

Mon, June 6: Athfest CD Release Party @ 8 PM @ Melting Point
It's time for the release of 2011's Athfest CD! This show will feature samples from the album as well as several of the bands on the CD including Powerkompany and their sweet melodies. How exciting!

Fri, June 10: The Shutups @ 10 PM @ Caledonia Lounge
I caught a set from the Shutups at last year's Athfest, and I've been dying to hear their indie pop sound again ever since. This one's going to be fun!

Sat, June 11: Bambara @ 10 PM @ Caledonia Lounge
Hands down one of the best bands in Athens, noise rock kings Bambara will be leaving our town for New York very soon, so catch them while you can! You will NOT want to miss their show, I can promise you that. Bring your earplugs, and get ready to rock!

Mon, June 13: The Dirty Lungs @ 9:30 PM @ Caledonia Lounge
Birmingham, Alabama's the Dirty Lungs are visiting us in the middle of the month to share their psychedelic rock sound! Playing with Green Gerry and his newer full band as well as Shithead and Silent Coyote, this should be a cool show.

Sat, June 18: Camp Amped Session 1 Finale @ 7 PM @ Nuçi's Space
So what does the future hold for the Athens music scene? We can all get a glimpse of the youngest, newest emerging bands in our town at Camp Amped's Session 1 Grand Finale showcase. Bring your family and friends too 'cause this show is free for all ages!

Sat, June 18: Music Video Showcase @ TBA @ 40 Watt
Are you ready to pick your favorite? 2011's Sprockets Music Video Competition Showcase features the latest and greatest music videos from our town's bands including two of the ones you saw during Echoreyn of Athens' Video Week last week from the Athens band and the Orkids! Best of all, you get to vote for this year's audience choice award after your visual immersion as well.

Thurs, June 23: Flagpole Athens Music Awards @ 6 PM @ Morton Theater
Ah, the Flagpole Athens Music Awards! It's like the Grammys but better. Don your classy clothes, watch your favorite Athens musicians accept their awards, and get a nice big dose of Athens culture at the same time. It's certainly an experience like no other!

Thurs, June 23: Athfest Kickoff Party @ 10 PM @ 40 Watt
When the Flagpole Athens Music Awards ends, make your way over to the 40 Watt for the official awards show after party. Featuring southern rockers Ponderosa, you're sure to see some of your favorite local musicians in the crowd as well. What a fun time!
